Position Overview:
This entry- to mid-level role involves working with fiberglass and carbon fiber, developing tooling and molds, and assisting with the assembly and finishing of components. The Model Maker I will be mentored by experienced team members and is expected to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while contributing to high-quality project outcomes.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Fabrication & Assembly
• Surface parts and fit components for assemblies.
• Perform fiberglass and composite lamination using epoxy resins and carbon fiber materials.
• Trim, sand, and finish composite parts to meet quality standards.
• Create foam plank build-ups for prototype and tooling applications.
• Assist in the development of composite tooling and molds.
• Participate in vacuum forming (vac-form) processes.
Shop Operations
• Safely operate a variety of general shop tools, including band saws, table saws, clamps, and other hand and power tools.
• Perform routine preventive maintenance on shop equipment.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace.
• Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
Collaboration & Support
• Work closely with team members and mentors on project tasks.
• Support customer-related project activities as needed.
• Read and interpret written and verbal instructions to execute tasks accurately.
• Contribute to daily shop organization and clean-up activities.
Skills, Qualifications, and Experience:
Education & Experience
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in a model shop, composites environment, autobody, or related field.
Skills & Abilities
• Familiarity with most general shop tools, including band saws, table saws, clamps, and hand tools.
• Proven ability to laminate (lay up fiberglass) and trim composite parts.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to operate shop equipment safely.
• Good attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to read, comprehend, and execute written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Must possess personal tools and a toolbox.
Preferred Qualifications
• Certificate in Autobody, Automotive Technology, or a related field.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Experience with carbon fiber composites and epoxy resins.
• Familiarity with vacuum forming (vac-form) processes.
• Experience working with 3D-printed materials.
• Flexibility to work overtime, including evenings and weekends, as needed to meet project deadlines.
