Position Overview:
The Panel Shop Technician is responsible for the layout, assembly, and wiring of electrical control panels used in automated manufacturing systems. This entry-level position supports the build of high-quality electrical panels by following engineering drawings, schematics, and customer specifications. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, eager to learn the electrical trade, and committed to safety and quality.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assist in the layout, assembly, and wiring of electrical components for control panels according to engineering drawings, schematics, and bills of material.
• Route and terminate wires, cables, and harnesses using proper tools and techniques while maintaining neatness and organization.
• Mount electrical devices such as PLCs, relays, terminal blocks, circuit breakers, power supplies, and HMIs.
• Interpret electrical schematics, panel layout drawings, and wiring diagrams to ensure accurate installation.
• Label wires and components in accordance with company and customer standards.
• Perform point-to-point wiring checks and continuity testing to verify accuracy and functionality.
• Maintain high standards of quality, safety, and workmanship throughout the assembly process.
• Utilize hand tools and basic power tools such as wire strippers, crimpers, drills, and screwdrivers.
• Accurately record labor hours and task progress within the company’s ERP system.
• Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and fellow technicians to resolve issues and improve build efficiency.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on cost, quality, and productivity.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area in accordance with 5S and lean manufacturing principles.
• Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and safety regulations, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Assist with panel testing, troubleshooting, and preparation for shipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support project and departmental needs.
Skills, Qualifications, and Experience:
Required Qualifications
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Entry-level experience or basic knowledge in electrical assembly, panel wiring, or a related field (vocational training is a plus).
• Basic ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and engineering drawings.
• Familiarity with common electrical components such as relays, terminal blocks, circuit breakers, and power supplies.
• Mechanical aptitude and proficiency with standard hand and power tools.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
• Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills.
• High regard for safety standards and safe work practices.
• Willingness and eagerness to learn and grow within the electrical field.
Preferred Qualifications
• Certificate or coursework in Electrical Technology, Mechatronics, or a related technical program.
• Exposure to industrial automation equipment or manufacturing environments.
• Basic understanding of PLC systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley or Siemens).
• Familiarity with electrical standards such as NFPA 79, UL 508A, and NEC.
• Experience with wire labeling systems and basic electrical testing equipment (e.g., multimeters).
Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods.
• Capability to lift and carry materials up to 25 pounds.
• Manual dexterity required for precise wiring and assembly tasks.
• Ability to work in a manufacturing/shop environment with exposure to typical industrial conditions.
Work Environment
• Fast-paced industrial manufacturing environment supporting the automotive and automation industries.
• Regular interaction with cross-functional teams including engineering, manufacturing, and quality.
• Overtime and occasional weekend work may be required to meet project deadlines.
